Itinerary

Itinerary

Day 1

We check in at Dublin Airport for the flight to Cologne Airport arriving early evening and transfer to  our hotel in the heart of Rudesheim situated on the “golden stretch” of the river Rhine and famous for vineyards, castles and winding cobbled streets of the old town.  Stop to indulge yourself with a slice of apple strudel served with lashings of fresh cream in one of the lively cafes of the bustling Drosselgasse

Day 2

A full day in pretty Rudesheim taking in the atmosphere of the festively decorated market stalls that circle the old town.  Over one hundred and twenty stalls present products, specialties and customs from twelve different countries in the famous Drosselgasse, festively decorated with sparkling lights and Christmas decorations and before your very eyes you can watch dolls, candles, wood carvings, and the famous arched candles being made.  Don’t forget to try delicious regional Christmas specialties: a glass of mulled wine for which the town is famous for, or an authentic Rudesheimer coffee, made with locally distilled Asbach brandy and cream. For a change, perhaps visit Siegfried’s mechanical Musikkabinet, set inside an ancient noble house and one of the greatest collections of self-playing musical instruments and robotic automatons.

Day 3

This morning we travel to the original and first Christmas market in Frankfurt,– set around the historic old quarter of Romerburg and Paulsplatz, the half timbered houses of the old town are brightly lit up by thousands of twinkling fairylights and red ribbons, and the smell of gluhwein , baked apples and gingerbread hangs in the air why not treat yourself to Bethmannchen, a mouthwatering marzipan treat.

Day 4

Enter the Wiesbaden Twinkling Star Christmas Market on the Shlossplatz through one of the illuminated four gates in the shape of golden lilies, where the stalls are decked out in the colours of the city’s coat of arms, blue and gold, and looked over by a huge elegantly decorated Christmas tree adorned with thirty thousand light bulbs and a thousand blue and gold ribbons. Truly a sight to behold and a treasure trove of all kinds of gifts, souvenirs and culinary delights.   Then take the chance to lose yourself under the spectacular glittering beams of light at the Mainz Christmas Market that takes place on the square in front of the thousand-year-old St Martin’s Cathedral.  If you’re lucky, you may be able to hear one of the atmospheric concerts from the cathedral while marveling at the life size Nativity figures and rotating musical clock with eighteen hand carved angel figures.

Day 5

Travel through the pretty villages of the Rhine, we’ll stop off at the Cologne Christmas Markets en route to the airport where the Christmas magic continues. With no fewer than six Christmas markets for you to enjoy, with fantastic atmosphere and numerous stalls around the mighty Cathedral.  We’ll then transfer to Cologne airport for the evening flight back to Dublin.
